CLASSIC ABSURDITY 2002 FEBRUARY - MARCH 2002
HOME PAGE / / NOW PLAYING AT EXIT THEATRE
February & March 2002 EXIT Theatre presented the astounding spills of Alfred Jarry's slapstick political fantasia, the mind boggling thrills of Eugene Ionesco's verbal gymnastics and the heart stopping chills of Fernando Arrabal's surrealist suspense all surrounded by a carnival of early evening readings to rile the crowd and late night comedy to send 'em home smiling.
From the heart of San Francisco, deep in Fringe territory EXIT Theatre presented a three-ring festival of its signature absurdist fare. Featuring three classic absurdist Main Stage Plays, late night Sketch Comedy and early evening Staged Readings.

MAIN STAGE PLAYS ...
  • THE BALD SOPRANO by Eugene Ionesco
"The highlight of the year … a great, must-see show" The List (Ireland)
Ireland's Asylum Theatre Company brings it's stripped down, sent up, furiously funny adaptation of Ionesco's classic comedy to San Francisco.
"Superb…a fluid, seamless blur of motion" Irish Sunday Times
The banal post-dinner conversation of Mr. and Mrs. Smith is interrupted by the late arrival of their bizarre guests, Mary, their flirtatious maid, and an underemployed fireman. Starring Donal Gallagher and Geraldine O'Grady (the 1999-2000 International Rose of Tralee) who between them play all six characters, fluidly changing from persona to persona and adding an edge of physical mayhem to the verbal anarchy of the original play.
"Wonderfully portrayed … will have you in stitches" Irish Examiner
Asylum Theatre Company's production of Ionesco's absurdist comedy was first performed at the Granary Theatre, Cork in June 1999 and has played two Irish tours as well as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Cork Fringe Festival. This is Asylum's first tour outside Europe.
    8:30PM WED-SAT FEB 20 - MAR 2, 2002 EXIT STAGE LEFT 415-673-3847 $12-$20
  • UBU ROI by Alfred Jarry
When Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi first opened in 1896, the foul language, grotesque acting, and open criticism of the government caused a riot. More than 100 years later, this hilarious and piece still delivers dangerous truths about the corruption of power. Half Macbeth, half-schoolboy pottymouth, Ubu and his scheming wife usurp the throne, throw gold to the ravenous populace, go to war with Russia, all while completely failing to exhibit any redeeming qualities. Rebecca Novick's production for EXIT theatre's Classic Absurdity Festival stars Paul Jennings and Valerie Weak as the Ubu's and features scenic art by Steve Lieber (well-known to comics buffs as one of the Hawkman illustrators). In this pared-down version of what's often described as the first absurdist play, the Keystone Cops meet George Bush as the army of Poland fights with rubber chickens and food-relief packages rain down out of the sky. There couldn't be a better time to see a play about the way the world goes when the biggest oaf has all the power. 8:30PM WED-SAT FEB 20 - MAR 2, 2002 EXIT THEATRE 415-673-3847 $12-$20
  • The CONDEMNED MAN'S BICYCLE by Fernando Arrabal
An absurdist autobiography emerges from Franco's Spain as a Freudian fairytale with socialist ideals. This playful short work, both erotic and farcical, tells the story of a young mans struggle to create within a paranoid and repressive society. Directed by Rafel Klopotowski with: Jeffrey Cohlman, Richard Johnson, Ruby Unger (member Actors Equity Association) and Ben Samuels. 8:30PM WED-SAT FEB 20 - MAR 2, 2002 EXIT ON TAYLOR 415-673-3847 $12-$20
