5review = Fun and entertaining. The acting was good. The plot was a little predictable for a mystery. I liked the cold noir style of the whole thing, and the old San Francisco setting. I commend it for dwelling into serious drama and not falling back on light, fluffy comedy, like so many other Fringe plays. Saxaphone added a nice touch.

This classy bit of 50s detective murder mystery by Carla Hatley is set in San Francisco and comes complete with its own original saxophone work by Marcos Estebez. Unfortunately, it got a bit sloppy at the very end -- past the resolution -- when the narrator/columnist becomes too expository and the murder victim returns to explain some plot points, which made it feel a bit heavy when it already had the feeling of being over. Still, it was very enjoyable and well performed. And another unique genre entry for the Fringe.

5review = Close... but no film-noir.
While this play is a spoof of that classic film genre, it lacked a lot of the style and mood that is the hallmark of film-noir.
With the exception of two cues in the hour of this play, the entire show was brightly lit. While I understand the limitations of tech at the Fringe, there were many, many opportunities to create, play with, even make fun of the noir-mood via lighting. Yet these opportunities were not seized.
As well, most of the cast members were not in synch with or didn't understand the genre they were spoofing. One actor did get it and was quite on the money with the right flavor. Several of the actors seemed to go up on their lines sporadically or not hit the mark, and then moments later would nail something. Perhaps it was an off performance...? (there were technical difficulties prior to the performance I saw, perhaps this threw them off their game)
The script had a few inspired laughs, yet at other times just missed the mark. I really wanted the entire show to be excellent, being a fan of noir and spoofs of that genre.
I really sense if they had more time to refine this, it would be tight, fun, and capture the mood and melodramatic flair with just the right humor.
The choice of having a live saxophonist providing the "soundtrack" and "score" --underscoring ranging from sultry riffs to frenetic flashes-- was inspired and served the piece well. I hummed the protagonist's theme all the way to the next theatre, so they got me there.
There is the making of something quite delightful and solid with this show and I hope they continue crafting it beyond the Fringe... truly a jewel in the rough. Still one of the better shows in the Fringe and definitely worth catching (their final performance is @ 2:30 on Sunday the 17th, one of the better choices in that time slot).

The throw back to the old 40's style was wonderful.
The subtle humor and mulitple references to San Francisco
added to the ejoyment.

5review = This murder mystery is a hoot because the patter is so dead-on true to it's roots in the Hollywood films of the 40's. While not shooting for laughes, you find yourself smiling throughout as the descriptive gymnastics roll off the stage. Some of the deliveries could be tighened up as the dialogue would benefit from a more staccato, rapid-fire delivery. But overall Cudos to the cast, especially Gary Barth for his Det. Breslen/Frank Ramsey accomplished wonderfully with two distint vocal styles, Carla Hatley for yeoman duties all craftfully done and nice work by Marcos Estebez setting the mood via Sax.

5review = Double Counterpoint is great fun. Its a classic hard boiled murder mystery with a tight script that Sam Spade would have loved. Harper Prescott's noir styled similes hit home like a black sap across the back of the neck in a dark alley [ or is that like a slap from a dame]. Carla Hatley's acting is superb. Well written, acted and directed. A great romp down Dashell Hammett Lane.

5review = Carla Hatley's "Double Counterpoint" is crisp, fast-moving, and balanced. From the moment Marcos Estebez' sultry sax hands us over to Dana Kelly's Sam Spadesque naration,
the action is murder mystery simile circus
meets repartee olympics. We were at a serious disadvantage without the luxury of instant replay following the numerous staccato verbal exchanges. The only remedy will be to see "Double Counterpoint" again.
Susan Allen is a delicious sleaze and a truly
clueless waitress and Gary Barth provides
positive support with his dual detective / newshound characters.
The successful melding of these talents is obviously not a fluke. Under William Hall's direction Kelly, Allen, and Hatley have walked off with BEST OF FRINGE honors before and are, no doubt, destined to do so again.
