How does a Chinese-American guy growing up in Oklahoma with little knowledge
of anything Chinese find his roots and where does this investigation take
him? Byron Yee gives us a sensitive portrayal of this search and the meaning
of being a "paper son," a part of his heritage which lays forth
the path and meaning of becoming an American. An important symbol in the
part of that search and quest is Angel Island, the "Ellis Island of
the West" which symbolized passage, but all too often was a concentration
camp. Possibly the only production at the Fringe representing Chinese
heritage, I highly recommend it.

5review = I know, I know. We were all waiting for Opium. And I almost blew
this one off. But... Paper Son is back and *better* than it ever was. Go
see it while you still can. Byron is a talented writer and a fantastic
performer and should be seen while he's still a local treasure. The show
deserves a packed house. If you haven't seen it before. Go. Get up. Turn
off your computer and just go. -Nuf said.

5review = Well-conceived and performed monologue. A revised encore of a
previous year's Best of SF Fringe show that I had missed. Byron is very
funny and has nice presence. It's a history lesson, made palatably entertaining
and funny, that you won't learn in school (ie: anything besides European
countries that happened to be empires at the time, or anything that makes
America sound like less than the home of the free). It's a personal journey,
and also Byron makes it a soothing, easily watchable show. Byron relates
his soul-crushing Hollywood experiences, as he tries to learn the insulting
ethnic roles that are all his agency will line up for him. He questions
his fully Americanized identity and searches beyond to reveal the mystery
of his father's identity. I was reminded of Charlie Varron's "The
People's Violin" from this summer, but Byron got there first! I appreciated
the slides, pictures tell so much, and the poems etched by Chinese "inmates"
at Angel Island, the!
Ellis Island of the West, were very powerful.

5review = Byron Yee's "Paper Son" is a sensitive,
heartfelt window into exploration of his
father's secretive past, catalyzed by visits
to Angel Island as well as Hollywood. With
skill and humor, Byron brings his family and
guides to life. Bravo and thank you!
