In their final performances at this year's Fringe, The Regular Show (estrogen
humor) was placed quite appropriately across the hall from Neo-Surrealist
Systems (testosterone humor). Each has its joys, but most writers of media
are men, and I thoroughly enjoyed this loose collection of women's humor.
The desire for sleep over sex, or the vignettes about women's appreciation
of cats, or the wonderfully funny reading of an old advertisement about
a wonder bra, were cleverly and hilariously portrayed. This was a fun hour.

5review = This enthusiastic ensemble, in a variety format of sketches and
monologues, though directed well enough, could have used an editor.
Sketches, while clever at times, lacked strong interaction between characters
(and it one case, compelling puppetry, or a satire thereof).
Monologues, while showcasing each of the writer's strengths as performers,
tended to lose focus.
Arwen Anderson is a delightful storyteller, but a stronger focus on its
central themes and some judicious editing would have made the piece more
than a wacky family anecdote.
Andrea Kulchewski (a terrific stage presence whose talent matches that
of SNL's Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer) shines in a solo piece earning
a cupcake-- a welcome change from her commentator and narrator roles in
other sketches. And in what I presume are her own sketches,
Randy Sterns shows off both her acting and writing talents exploring the
emotions of communicating in two memorable sketches, one set in the Video
Cafe and another in bed (the latter also hysterically funny).
Two strong nonfiction concepts, one a performance of Craigslist postings
and the other an ad for a sleep bra, while imaginatively staged, ultimately
lack a dramatic impact. Overall, the entire show came to life when the
ensemble dropped the "ain't the real world wacky" POV and moved
into honest explorations
of relationships and family.
The intro and finale, while amusing, seemed unnecessary decoration, tacked
on to fill out an hour. While this show's material disappointed me, I fully
expect that
given a couple of years to hone their talent and this ensemble will be
as strong as any company San Francisco has produced.

Do not judge this book by its cover.
Also, you better show up early, cause word of mouth
is spreading and the last two regular shows are likely
to sell out. Arwen Anderson's tale of finding vegetarian
alternatives back in Pennsylvania will cheer up all the
emigres from east of Walnut Creek. Randy Sterns is gorgeous
in her both her poignant "Video Cafe" and her chuckle
producing "I like to Sleep". I love Andrea Kuchlewski
and you will understand why after seeing "I Got
It."
Euclides Pereyra's energy filled acting is a joy to witness,
he adds his special sauce to every piece he is in.
Lastly, but not least, Sharon Rowley steals the show,
without saying a word...

5review = I really enjoyed all the cast members, particulary randy sterns
who has a real depth and ability to be funny and more serious. I also think
Andrea Kuchlewskiis so funny playing these infomerical characters(princess
and the bee as well as the sleep bra).

5review = Review, part 2:
I forgot to comment on the AUDIENCE at Sunday's show: An audience member
chose this event to stage a canny experiment on the effects upon an infant
of a scary dark room, sudden bright lights, and roars of laughter and applause
from the surrounding mob of unfamiliar people. As it so happens, it freaks
them out. And anyone wondering if babies are fascinated by other babies
need only have observed as the baby heckled the cast when a baby doll was
brought on stage. Ice chips may have been the quietest thing the mother
had to soothe her child, but not quiet enough! Not to let the back of the
audience feel left out in having their entertainment interrupted, the mother
tried to soothe her child...but not actually OUTSIDE the theatre, in the
hallway...instead just near the exit doors, where all those alarming stimuli
were just as present for her child.
- Apart from that, I was quite pleased with the audience.

With the Regular Show!
- Funny, touching, and heartfelt, nice short pieces that move quickly
from one to the next. Thrill to the horror of the Toe Jam story! Laugh
with the woman staving off her boyfriend's advances when "she wants
to sleep!" See the inside of the mind acted out during the break-up
scene! I liked Sharon's sullen Movieplex cashier and the "Cat",
Andrea's preening talk-show host and idiotically cheerful clothing model,
Randy's hostile screenwriter and obsessed girlfriend, Arwen and Euclides'
CommunityBoard listings.

5review = excellent writing and performance. Unlike some fringe performances,
this one shows clear signs of careful editing. You won't be disappointed.
I enjoyed the show despite the evil woman who brought her infant and let
it
rattle a cup of ice cubes for the entire hour.
