5review = This play is well written and will hold your attention, despite
several anachronisms and the stereotypical southern characters. Assuming
it is not based on an actual historical event, I believe this story of
a white woman martyrizing herself to save a few slaves seems to smell of
Christians cleaning their conscience for the biblical hypocrisy of slavery.
Of course the "bleeding heart liberals" in SF audiences will
feel good about themselves, but how would this fare in Georgia? Moreover,
the southern local color is not convincing enough (excepting the performance
of the apothecary, although he seems to be a superfluous character). The
onslaught of monologues gets tiresome (there are many opportunities for
potentially exciting dialogues) but the surprise ending makes up for it.

5review = Run, Jenny
Run, Jenny is a drama by Michael Thomas Tower about the trial of a northern
white woman for killing her plantation owner husband. But it's really about
her scheme to free her husband's slaves. With no set and almost no movement
around the stage, this is more of a very well rehearsed and performed reading,
a series of sketches of the characters involved with the ante-bellum South.
Each character has a different level of involvement or non-involvement
in slavery, and the true evil of the situation is the "protection
of the South" and the blockage of justice.

5review = Run Jenny is proof that nontraditional staging can be dramatically
compelling! Story-telling at its best. You wont have
any problem finding meaning here. Absolutely: See it!

very strong way. One of those brief moments of theatre that I may never

5review = What a surprise! A very welcome difference from anything else
Ive seen at the fringe. They take an incident (is it true or not?)
from American history and take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions
that leaves you breathless. Might want to take a hankie.

5review = When youve had your fill of Fringe absurdity, crudity and/or
presumption, Run Jenny brings you back to what Theatre is really all about.
A polished and dynamic story, forcefully told by a well directed and accomplished
cast, provides an experience that will affect you. Highly recommend it.

In less than one hour the audience comes to know the characters and
feel for them. Excellent performances by all.

5review = Michael Thomas Tower's RUN, JENNY is about slavery and its abolition.
The sweet violin at the opening effectively puts us in the South where
the action takes place. Thanks to the skilled acting, RUN, JENNY shows
the full range of human reactions to any ethical challenge. Joseph Tally
as the Banker plays an utterly despicable character so well that, when
we met him afterword, he needed to tell us he really wasn't like that!
At the climax, Mahasin Islam, who plays Jenny, shows her powerful acting
and singing talent and steals the show. There was no weak acting anywhere
in the show. You'll find yourself sitting at the edge of your seat. Let's
see more from Michael Thomas Tower and more from Bay Stage!
- Michael Thomas Tower's "Run Jenny" is a one act powerhouse.
It deals with slavery and its abolition. Its characters also reveal the
range of ways we humans behave when faced with ethical challenges. Every
actor gave an excellent performance. Due to the emotional buildup and climax
of the play, Mahasin Islam who plays Jenny has, and uses to best advantage,
the chance to win audience member's hearts while showing a stunning range
of talent. She steals the show as she reveals the truth. Let's see more
from Michael Thomas Tower and more from Bay Stage!

5review = Bravo to Baystage for this timeless story.
Diamond-like, the characters masterfully
reveal different facets of the unfolding
story of a courageous plantation owner's wife
who acts on her abolitionist views. Poetic,
not preachy. The synergy between Henrietta and
Jenny on stage is riveting. Go see it!

5review = Important concepts about slavery, but presentation tends to be
weak (I found myself drifting) until the ending, which is fine! Wish it
had more interaction between characters, and emotional content which wasn't
so intellectualized. The only character portraying any emotion was Jenny
herself.
