The Wierd Sisters deliver a fine staging of The Ramayana. Songs, shadow
puppets and live action combine to work a magical performance.

Hanuman was fantastic.
There were a variety of technical glitches that slowed down the pace, and
were frustrating the performers.
Stylistically it hasn't all meshed yet. The performers are very capable,
and the methods of story telling WILL work, they just didn't for me last
night.
Do give it a try. It was interesting last night and will only get better.

Beginning and ending with a taped reading from the Hindu epic, The Ramayana,
telling the compelling story of the abduction of Sita by Rawana, the Demon
King, "Beneath Sita's Belly" fills in the period of the long captivity
of Sita in the Demon King's garden. Too many elements were left unexplained
(including the title) for me to feel the significance of the captivity,
especially her husband's absence from the story, the Demon King's absence
during most of the long captivity, leaving me with no sense of morale in
what I had assumed was a classic Hindu morality play. Jane Chen as Hanuman,
the Monkey Messenger, gives a competent performance of well-formed dialogue
lines for this fable, and her song adds a pleasant touch. The shadow light
puppetry by Janaki Ranpura is intriguing with its well-created figures,
but the spell seemed broken by the addition of cartoon-like exclamation
words, like "Bam!" Unfortunately, I left feeling the promise of
a modern telling of a classic Hind!
u story had not met its expectation.
