This very artfully sung one-woman show by Karen Melander-Magoon tells the
story of Lillie Langtry, English performer and later on California vintner,
although most know her as an intimate of King Edward VII of England, amongst
others, many others. The fact that the performer, writer, director is also
the current co-owner of the Langtry vineyard made me question how self-serving
this production is. For some reason unbeknownst to me, it begins and ends
with the god Hercules singing to his favorite "Lillie." The piano
arrangements of Frank Fanning aspire to Rogers & Hammerstein, but suffer
from a lack of variant texture which makes it all feel more like an evening's
entertainment for a church fund-raiser. Melander-Magoon would have done
well to have someone else write the story. Langtry had one of the juicier
personal lives of her era, and it all came across as being milk toast.
