I had to see the Neos show twice again this year. Their last night show
has become the Fringe closing ceremony for me and lots of other performers.
I loved the regular stuff like the Cheese Break, Love, the black light
fun and of course the naked people. The Doer and The Thinker I loved - Beckett
with muppets!
It was also nice to see the, apparently unappreciated, move away from
comedy to more thoughtful, serious material that played with the audiences
emotional reactions.

Although the Fringe is over, I have to give this show its due. I'd never
seen Wayne Harris before, and came away thinking "that man has heart!".
He's a consummate performer, riveting, and the show was beautifully rendered.
Although I usually tend to favor the absurdist/experimental stuff offered
up by the Fringe Fest, it was refreshing to see something so real (although
made up), so "down home", so grounded in human experience and
particularly that of African-Americans in the south. He was able to bring
such humanity and complexity to each of his 3 characters. Anyone who can
transform an initially unsympathetic character (the pimp) into a person
of grace/understanding/compassion by the end of the show has my vote. But
I've given too much away...

This show was pretty good. They started off very strong with the rap song
and Li'l Kim Chi was hilarious (although the music was a little loud and
I missed some of the lyrics). Overall, they had great ideas. I just wish
these guys would get some better actors (and director), then the ideas would
be better executed. Most of the cast was ok, but it's the (new) weak ones
that keep this show just ok as opposed to fabulous. I get the feeling they
think since it's sketch, it's ok to over-act and be campy. Allright, sure,
but you still have to do that well. Stop it with the forced facial expressions
already. Take an acting lesson and learn to be honest onstage and don't
force the funny on us. Just because it's sketch doesn't mean you shouldn't
create a committed character. If you're going to play an older person, really
be an older person -not just a young person in a wig -and it'll be much
more satisfying to watch. One girl in particular was so uncomfortable on
stage that she couldn!
't look up or speak up. I hate to pick on anyone, but if you're gonna do
sketch you can't be afraid. I don't mean to sound like a pretensious critic,
it's just that this show could be so much better if it was just tightened
up and cared for a little bit more. The ideas truly are funny and some of
the old cast is still right on (the priest giving sex advice you are hilarious
and psycho-neurotic girl you are adorable), and I did howl a lot of the
time. I guess the audience who comes to see these guys could care less about
how well the actors execute the show. I'll try to lighten up more the next
time I go to see them.

The reviewer below me was right about the first skit; it's been done before
and wasn't terribly memorable. But then the second skit came up about previews
for upcoming theater, and melo-dramatic cliche one-liners over-acted by
over-zealous actors were portrayed ("No Dad, I never wanted to be an
astronaut, that was your dream NOT MINE!")and I don't think I ever
stopped laughing after that. The film-done-by-theater skit was so damn funny,
so well done. My god! They fit so much into an hour. I didn't get some of
the skits, but I still thought they were hilarious for some reason, I think
because the actors were so committed, they had such great timing and they
had natural comedic talent (they did little things with their expressions
and voices that was their own that nobody can copy)that just took them a
few steps beyond the usual that we've all seen. I had just come from OPM's
"I Can't Believe They're Not Oriental". Those guys are always
sold out and have a big fan base. And thou!
gh they are fun and have clever ideas, their weak points are their actors
and failure to end their skits confidently. That's where Ludlow and Canal
beats them. (After the show, I said, "That was ten times better than
OPM", and the people behind heard me and heartily agreed.) Who wrote
and directed those sketches? I want to work with them! AH! Soooo good.

Sara and Ed are both very good performers. clean, committed, precise. the
cello is cool. also, the section of video wherein sara's face is accelerated
through rapid contortions on the projection screen is rad. countless has
its moments, as all the other posts here have noted. unfortunately, it does
have the following problems:
a) the initial narrative premise (a man who has found a formula to predict
the fluctuations of the market) is exactly the same as that of the movie
Pi. if it was not simply looted from that movie, the fact of the film's
existence was carelessly ignored.
b) the repeated ascending/descending, optimism/pessimism movement on the
staircase. it happened too many times. the conceptual point is made the
first time sara does it. the first time it happens, it really lets us in
to the piece, because it's the first time we can link the worlds of the
two actors. subsequent repetitions begin to shut us out again.
c) most of the video is lame. cars at night, people on city streets...these
are the same things that everybody puts in their multimedia video pieces.
yes, the piece refers to the repetitive patterns of human behavior, but
there have got to be fresher ways to portray that. when the images were
most abstract the video was good.
d) there is no middle. initially, ed's character advances an entirely deterministic
conception of history and market fluctuation. patterns exist, are absolute,
can be analysed and interpreted. this perspective is apparently proven by
sara's confessions (we see that her experience of privation is only one
point in a cyclical pattern).
fine.
then ed tells us that in fact, the stock market can't be predicted, that
the patterns change too rapidly, that we are always one step behind, much
like sara's character with the premonitory dreams. it seems implicit that
in life and markets, as in dreams, there is some stuff that just happens,
some things that don't make sense, some dreams that are truly random or
insignificant.
the piece would be much stronger if there were a progression through that
discovery of randomness. i don't know. maybe the show actually posits a
scenario in which the future is written, we're just too hungry/tired/lonely/stupid
to read it. even so, accepting our limited knowledge necessitates accepting
a degree of chaos, and i never felt that the play revealed that moment of
acceptance.
that's basically it. there is obviously a great deal of talent among the
major contributors to this piece, but the creators of text and video should
hold themselves to a higher standard.
thanks

Review of Twin Speak
By Nick Cederlind
If youre looking to laugh, cry, and be humbled all at once this
fall, look no further than Brian and Michael Ahos play, TwinSpeak.
Written and performed by two twin brothers, TwinSpeak presents a very touching,
poignant expose of personal development and coping with issues such as personal
identity, family loss, security, and acceptance. Autobiographical in nature,
Brian and Michael are able to give form to and express the impact of life
as a twin on the psyche. With surprisingly simplistic storytelling (there
are few props and a stage smaller than my kitchen floor), Michael and Brian
are able to affect their audience on the deep, meaningful levels that almost
anyone can find in their family life. The most notable talent at work in
the writing of this play can be found in its ability to abstract a universal
impression on the psyche of life as a twin that almost any sibling can identify
with regardless of genetic similarity. Siblings different in appearance,
yet !
intensely alike in personality will be able to distinguish and identify
with themes like constant comparison, fear of separation, fear of losing
independence, etc. While this is happening, the audience will find themselves
surprised by not only the enjoyable comedy infused into such a touching,
personal story, but the simple fact that the dichotomy of laughter and personal
struggle works so smoothly. Brain and Michaels deft interweaving of
these elements into the performance will certainly keep you on your toes.
Towards the plays conclusion, we see how this rich and tumultuous
life has strengthened these two brothers in their ability to take their
lives in new directions, symbolizing how the themes of acceptance, identity,
and security can manifest themselves in healthy ways even as a result of
the most turbulent times. If youre someone whos bad at gambling,
this production offers redemption. When you place your $7 bet on TwinSpeak,
youll get more than your moneys worth !
each time... - its a guaranteed winner.
