It was a cute show, great premise, good music. The band played over some
of the vocals but I sepecially liked Adam Genser as the manager. He had
the best voice in the cast. I'd like to see more of him.

5 stars for fun - 2 stars for the off-key singing and the mismatched band
music = a good solid 3 stars. I'm glad I saw it, and would have enjoyed
it more if the performances were a little better. Still, I'd say go rather
than no.
It's kinda like dinner at a bar. It's fun but don't expect gourmet quality.

Okay, let's all remember - this is the FRINGE! I didn't care that the many
(all?) of the actors are not singers, or they missed steps in the dance
numbers. In fact, I think that's part of the charm of this funny, poignant,
wonderful musical. I would say it rivals my own fringe show (shameless plug:
The Late Nite Talk Show) not only in heart and chutzpah! of the actors,
but in the fabulousness of the show. This is truly what the fringe is about.
If you want full production value spend $100 and go to ACT. (By the way
- Urinetown was a fringe show too!) I'll take this over that any day!

I wasn't going to bother reviewing this show but enough is enough. The author/director
of the show writes his own review?!(although I'll admit he was more honest
about the productions shortcomings than some of the previous reviewers.)
First of all it is Saturday's performance that I will review, because it's
the performance I saw ( and I'm sure as Hell not returning)
While none of the singing was "good" some was so bad as to be
physically painful. A women in the row in front of me held her hands over
her ears during nearly every number, not a good sign for a musical. If you
are producing a musical and cast only actors who can't sing you are doing
a disservice to both your audience and your performers. I came to this show
wanting and expecting to like it, after all; I love Baseball,I love musicals,I
love satire and I think the issue of gay athletes having to lie to keep
their careers is an important issue. So what's not to like? The show, Blanche,
the show. It's bad.
And as for the director's suggestion that a show doesn't really have to
be good because it's"only" the Fringe, what an insult to the hundreds
of talented artists who have brought moving, funny, challenging, and professional(in
the best sense of the word) productions to the Fringe over the past 12 years!

This show gave me what I came for and more: it was entertaining and actually
transported me from my realm to theirs at least once. The highlight was
a baritone duet (offkey but better than earlier!) about halfway through
showing much Sondheim influence. And when both young men started expressing
themselves at the same time and it was written and performed well enough
that I could follow them both, well, that was it: I was totally engaged
in the performance. I fully expected the audience to burst in to applause
when they finished - they didn't, but my heart was warm, I'll tell you.
It was also a big help that I'd been to a Giants' game recently!

What can I say? Is the play uneven? Yes. Is some of the singing off-key?
You betcha. So which of these reviews should you believe as you scan through
them? All of them -- and none of them. As the writer, director, producer
etc. of this show, I'm taking the unusual step to write this, not to defend
the show, which has obviously sparked a lot of responses, but to explain
what's happening. First of all, as someone has just pointed out, this IS
the Fringe Fest; that doesn't mean you don't have a right to expect something
good, but odds are it's not going to be completely polished and honed. So
it is with our play. Saturday night, our second show -- which precipitated
a few of these negative reviews -- was especially tough. We had a full house
but for whatever reason, it didn't click. Sunday night was much better.
We have one more show, this Saturday night, and we're hoping to really nail
it. One thing I can promise you is that the cast has worked really hard,
they've worked miracl!
es considering all the elements we've had to pull together -- choreography,
music, script, etc. -- in a very limited amount of time. While it's not
our intention that people enjoy it in a "waiting for guffman"
type way, that's just the stage it's at right now, and I thank the Fringe
for giving us the chance to do it.

I really enjoyed this show! Laura's face seems to be made of silly putty,
or something similarly malleable -- she jumps from character to character
with a delightful nimbleness, and captures them all brilliantly. This show
is by turns funny and poignant -- Laura uses comedy to pique our interest
in her story, then makes us care by revealing her true self.
Thank you! This show is what the Finge is all about.

I was happily surprised by this powerhouse play! Thought it would be a one-woman
show, but it was a full ensemble, sharply produced and choreographed. Gives
attendees a peek inside what it has been like to be a mormon woman through
history. Excellent execution, flawless delivery and lots of fun! I would
highly recommend this play to all fringers!!

I'll admit that the singing was occasionally off-key, and that many of the
actors were amateurs, but what an entertaining show all the same! Excellent,
jazzy live music, brilliant lyrics, hysterical flying props (lions, baseballs,
peanuts), and very timely commentary on current class tensions, using baseball
as a backdrop. Yes, this show has its shortcomings, but - like baseball
itself - it is great fun overall, and exciting, rousing entertainment to
boot!

It's hard to knock this play when it's obvious that most of the cast is
literally trying so hard not to drown. Yeah, they're under-rehearsed and
there are some technical aspects regarding the music which haven't even
been resolved but it still has some charm and hilarity, accidental and otherwise,
that makes this interesting. If you liked "Waiting for Guffman"
you might enjoy this on camp level alone. For those not interested in looking
up the definition of "camp" on dictionary .com: "...Camp
is popularity plus vulgarity plus innocence..." It's theater of the
people, my friends. You either love the idea of common folk giving it their
all or would rather be entertained only by the "elite" and established
professionals. In a diverse city like ours, there's room for both and the
Fringe thankfully, welcomes it all. So watch it, don't take it too seriously
and worry not on the hour if you feel you wasted it. I'm sure there are
worse things then supporting your fellow artists and wa!
tching something with such good heart and intent. I was going to write a
simple review about enjoying the nuttiness and poor singing but must confess
to reading some of the other reviews and feeling obligated to respond. Some
days you wake up that way I guess....

The 3-star reviews are obviously by friends of the cast and crew.
Behind the incompetence of the production, there is a glimmer of what might
possibly be a decently funny musical comedy.
The acting and singing are so bad that unintentional humor almost carries
the day, and the show almost works as a parody of itself.

You are all too kind. Really. This play was charming in the cast's obvious
glee in performing - and I tried to imagine what the songs would be like
even remotely on key, but people (I hate to be the naysayer but...), this
just was not good. Aside from the "boss" who started out very
strong a cappella (but got muddled as the rest of the cast did when the
music started up), the cast seemed like it was not adequately rehearsed.
Lines were forgotten, the dancers were off, and Vinnie mouthed the words
as Louis spoke them! Eek. Sorry - but there's no denying it

A 4 star premise. This could have been potentially a 4 star play with a
bit more deft writing. Instead, it's a 2 star musical. The singing was minor
league. The dancing was minor league. There was a large audience, probably
because the premise was great. On execution? A strike

I'm glad I got to see a whole company of talented local actors pull off
what must have been a very difficult task. The staging is inventive, the
two lovers attractive as all get out, and the music, with its heart in its
hand, is openly emotional and when it needs to be very wry and amusing in
a Frank Loesser way. The two brothers who play the corrupt uncle and even
corrupter nephew give the play a comic kick, and the actor who plays the
concessionaire selling popcorn and peanuts at the stadium has the kind of
theatrical presence I remember from seeing Bert Lahr. Try to go to see this
play if you possibly can.

I caught this play on opening night and was very impressed with both the
cast and material. First night jitters were evident every now and then but
it only seemd to fuel the energy of the players, who were clearly having
a ball. There was no shortage of good one-liners and I even found myself
singing one of the songs in my head the next day!
So, all in all a very entertaining evening and a great start to the Fringe
'03.

Hey!!! Wanna' have some fun? This musical play had some of the most hilarious
intended and unintended moments of any play I've seen. The singing was loud
and proud albeit adventurously off-key at times. Given that I had just seen
Phantom and witnessed the same thing in places, it's hard to take any of
that to heart. I guess sometimes the performers get swimmer's ear but I
digress: The fun thing about this play isn't just that alot of unexpected
things happen. There are plenty of plays that are full of surprises...you
know, the type where the person you least suspect is the murderer? Well
this is more like showing up to see a play and having the feeling that at
any moment absolutely anything can happen. It wouldn't surprise in the least
if within the last 5 minutes of the show, an earthquake happened, the actors
got into an actual brawl, a woman gave birth septuplets and a cable car
crashed into the theater!! When you see this kind of play, it's more then
entertainment. It's a !
bloodsport where you find yourself rooting for the performers to survive.
Great fun, good writing and even better chaos.
