SF FRINGE APPLICATION INFORMATION AND POLICIES

PARTICIPATION
The San Francisco Fringe is an open, non-juried, uncensored festival. As an applicant you are given the choice of two different Festival categories within which to participate, each with a separate application process:

STANDARD VENUE: Successful Standard Venue applicants are assigned to one of the downtown Fringe Venues and are scheduled for an allotted number of 60 minute performance slots. For more information see below
OR
BYOV (Bring Your Own Venue): Successful BYOV applicants secure their own performance space and determine the number of performances. There is no time limit on their performances. For more information see below

ELIGIBILITY
Any individual or company is eligible to apply to either category but only ONE application can be submitted per individual/company. If a company is not accepted in to the Standard Venue category at the Lottery on February 11th they may apply as a BYOV performer by the March 3rd deadline. The SF Fringe is designed to provide performance opportunities to the greatest number of artists possible, therefore duplicate applications by artists in any form is discouraged. If an individual/company has been found submitting more than one application, ALL applications submitted by that individual/company will be removed from the application process. The primary and secondary contacts of a company cannot be the contacts for a second company applying to The Festival. Companies in the Festival may not sell or transfer their spot to another company. If we find that a company has sold or transferred their place to a second company, both companies will be removed from The Festival and will forfeit their application fees.

APPLICATION
Below is a Fringe Festival application. In order for your application to be processed:
* All information requested on the application form must be provided in full
* Once an application has been submitted, each change to the information provided on your original application must be given in writing and accompanied by a $50 processing fee
* Applications must include 2 separate checks or money orders in US dollars
* 1 for the application fee (Standard Venue $475/ BYOV $350)
* 1 for the non-refundable $25 processing fee.
* Checks or money orders should be made payable to The San Francisco Fringe Festival.

CONFIRMATION
All applicants will be notified of the receipt of their application with in 48 hours. As we receive complete Fringe applications, we will deposit the non-refundable processing fee check of $25.00 (it must be a separate check). If your company secures a place in The Festival as a participant, The Fringe will deposit your application fee check. If the application fee check bounces, the application will be removed and placed at the bottom of the waiting list. If your application was neither successful nor put on the wait list, your application fee check will be returned with a notification letter.

Please read on for full information on Standard & Bring Your Own Venue categories.

Local (i.e. Northern California) participants will be selected by lottery. The Fringe will begin receiving applications at 9:00 AM on Wednesday January 7, 2004. All applications received by 5:00 PM on Friday January 30, 2004 will be entered in the lottery; any application received before or after these dates will not be accepted. To be considered a National applicant your entire company must be based outside of Northern California. To be considered an International applicant your entire company must be based outside of the US. National and International applications will be accepted on a first received, first accepted basis. The Fringe will receive applications between the 9:00 AM on Wednesday January 7, 2004 and by 5:00 PM on Friday Januay 30, 2004, any applications received before or after these dates will not be accepted.

WITHDRAWALS & REFUNDS
All withdrawals from The Festival must be made in writing by the company's primary contact. If a Standard Venue company in The 2004 Fringe withdraws, notification must be received by May 5, 2004 in order to receive a 50% refund of the application fee. A Standard Venue company that withdraws after May 5th will forfeit 100% of its application fee. As we approach publication of the program (late July) the Fringe will close the waiting list and return all application fees to companies that did not move to participant status. Applicants on the waiting list will be notified if a slot becomes available and may withdraw at any time (prior to accepting a slot) and have their application fee returned to them. Processing fees are non-refundable.

TECHNICAL PRODUCTION
All Festival performances start on time. There is a 60 minute time limit for Standard Venue performers. There are only 30 minutes between all performances, which includes fifteen minutes to strike the show that just ended and fifteen minutes to set up the next production with the audience being seated concurrently.

Venues are equipped with basic lighting and sound and each company will receive a 2 hour technical rehearsal. We will provide companies with more info on their venue so that they can be as prepared for this technical rehearsal as possible. The Fringe provides one technician in each Standard Venue to run lights and/or sound. All companies must supply one Production Stage Manager to call your show, any additional crew operation staff, and enough crew to set up and strike your show. Since there are some technical limitations in the venues, it is best to focus on the content of your play and try to keep the technical/production values as simple, imaginative and as compact as possible. THE VENUES PROVIDE NO STORAGE. Sets, props and costumes must be removed after each performance.

BOX OFFICE / TICKETS
The Fringe returns 100% of the box office ticket sales to the individual companies and provides all front of house staff (i.e. House managers, box office, ushers) for Standard Fringe Venue participants. Each company sets its own ticket price (rounded off to the nearest dollar) up to a maximum of $8.00. PLEASE NOTE that the Fringe sells Frequent Fringer passes (one-hundred $55 ten show passes are made available). You will receive $5 for any audience member using a Frequent Fringer pass to see your show.

OUT-OF-AREA PARTICIPANTS
Out-of-Area Participants, like locals are responsible for all aspects of production, as well as travel and accommodation expenses. With adequate advance notice, we MAY be able find volunteers for your tech crew. We do not have a billeting system for out of town performers.

PUBLICITY
Each Fringe company is expected to provide its own show-specific publicity. The Fringe provides general Festival publicity and your production will be listed in the official Fringe Program and on our website.
