Frankly, I was disappointed. I'd seen this group a while back at the Next
Stage and thought they had a lot of potential. But since then, for whatever
reason, that potential has been diluted to simply a gimmick. Doing long-form
improv isn't enough. Even doing long-form improv well isn't enough. It still
needs to have an edge and the show I caught Thursday night was barely a
notch or two above after-school special. Come on, guys! You're a talented
bunch of improvisers. Unadulterated happy endings are cheese whiz.

I thought the whole thing was overacted and corny. I didn't love that the
actors were waiting on the sidelines. I thought they did a good job of making
it seem like a real play, but it was overstylized. I don't really love the
concept of integrating technology.

I'm one of the co-directors of the show, so I don't expect you to accept
my opinion as unbiased. Here is the SF Bay Guardian Review:
"Framework: Tilted Frame Combined Art Form Entertainment's resident
improv company at Off-Market Theater, one of the festival's "Bring
Your Own Venues" this year combines old and new art forms to
create its unique brand of spontaneous theater. Incorporating Internet and
digital video technology into the long-form improv show, the cast of five
actors a compelling mix of personalities who interact and play off
of (and with) each other with ease and overt pleasure works together
with two Internet-surfing techies and one musician to produce a single,
hour-long play. Taking their cues from a randomly selected Web site, the
night I attended, the ensemble successfully wove together a drama replete
with romance, attempted murder, and various absurd plot twists and still
managed by the conclusion to tie up the loose ends into the happy ending
required of any well-made play. (Shalson)"

A great show--these guys are hilarious. Improv amazes me, especially when
it's done so well. (How five people can forge a coherent story from such
a random starting place is beyond me--but Tilted Frame pull it off brilliantly.)

This was a lot of fun, And amazing that the actors made it up as they went
along. I've seen a few things and I have to say this has been my favorite
so far....

I'm a fan because this troupe never lets me down. I laugh, I laugh alot
and then I laugh some more. The themes resonate with the audience, educate
them on current events and also illustrate Bay Area comedy very well. Diana
Brown is HYSTERICAL- and so ingenius- her laugh is contagious and her style
and stage presence is outstanding, Jonathan Caplan well- aside from being
fall on the floor, hold your stomach until it hurts funny- he's a great
improv player. He's definitely a crowd pleaser. Christopher DeJong- dorky
and funny and sexy- need I say more? Heather O'Brien, makes her character
so believable and Trish Tillman sweet, funny and never has a dull moment
on stage, very enjoyable to watch.
Their show flows like they do this every night. Go watch...it's a good time! |
