Play: It's Stupid to Steal...

Note to Hank Di Giovanni: Slow down. Take your time. Find the moments. Develope
your rapport with the audience. Work on your comic timing. Relax. Trust
the material instead of driving it like a semi down Highway 5. Also, get
rid of the hard hat as soon as possible as it casts a shadow over your eyes.
When I can't see your eyes I can't tell if anything that's being said is
registering emotionally with the actor, or if you're just faking it. If
the problem is with getting such a large amount of material out in sixty
minutes, then cut some of the material. I'd suggest starting with the gravesite
solioquy, as it's too cute, redundant, and out of character with everything
else. Both the writing and the acting had a lot of potential that I thought
was undercut by the lack of direction.

No, I did not forget to click onto the rating chart. This show was brutal.
The man who did this one man show, as attractive onstage as he was, should
not step on the stage until he can get his lines down. For Christ sake,
this is close to the end of the festival...and it still comes off like he
is struggling? It went from I'm rooting for him to "Oh please make
this stop" Even if it was a choice in vocal pattern, it was a poor,
poor choice. The direct eye contact became uncomfortable. The content and
veiled one liners became tedious. And just for my sanity, no human being
wipes their hands that long after eating a tiny piece of doughnut unless
they have anal retentive problems. I don't know if even he like what he
was doing. I grieve for the people who was thanked in this program in San
Francisco. It will make me think twice about going to any productions that
would put up this ten percent realized piece of... Theatre?

I wasn't going to write a review, but I am surprised by the above review!
This guy barely knew his lines and bridged his moments with a nervous "so,
you know, uh" constantly, looking over our heads in hopes of thinking
of his next line. Hopefully it will tighten up as the fringe progresses,
but I felt like he just wasn't ready for prime-time. And the script just
sort of sat there with no real point to the rambling...I guess I chuckled
a few times when he really got going on a chunk that he knew pretty well...

Here's a delightful one-man comedy that was TOO SHORT. We were enjoying
an intimate theatre experience, feeling like we were in a bar with a funny
buddy, when all of a sudden, he had to get back to the construction site.
Bummer. We wanted more. Check it out, well written, well performed and well
worth your time. |
