Uninhibited and incredibly generous… I loved this performance. It left me feeling deliciously uncomfortable as the “warts and all” humanity of the actors and characters emerged onstage. This show is a fine example of postmodern art keeping it real retaining its authenticity and earnestness while staying in motion, constantly drawing lines of flight. The dancing at the start was completely refreshing pretentiously unpretentious, liquid but almost pained… truly a joy to watch and a GREAT way to start the show. On the night I saw the show (9/10), there was something sparkling holding the actors together, keeping their machine well-oiled. Clearly they are all very talented and have made great strides inwardly and outwardly. Thank you to them and to anyone else who has the balls and verve to do improv. Bravo, bravis.

Lila Theatre's take on an "improv show" was by far a breathe of fresh air. I felt invested in each company member and found myself endulging in their ability to emotionally go there. They weren't afraid to not be funny....but rather determined to be real and live in the moment. I respected their honesty and adored their conviction. My only complaints are that 1. the show could've lasted longer 2. i would've liked to see more sketches and 3. i would have liked to see the entire ensemble on stage together more. the most exciting moments were when they were all working together... ie: the final dream scene rocked!!!!

As an improviser for over twenty years, who has worked for Second City and has taught all over the country...I would like to personally address Tanya Brewer's review. First. I would like to thank Tanya for seeing our show. I appreciate from the bottom of my heart that she enjoyed our show. But please, for the love of all that is holy and good...please do not ever compare another show (improv or otherwise) to another show. That is just bad form. As for Lila Theatre...I know the founders personally. They have been involved with building the improv community in San Francisco for a long time. They also deal specifically with Drama therapy...a place...I have taught in and dealt in for over twenty years. Lila Theater is an incredible theatre company. There is also the addage that you are seeing improvisational theatre. for the show Tanya saw on Sunday at the Exit on Taylor with Negroes...she missed the very exhausted Oui Be Negroes show the same night at the Dark Room at eight. Improv is not always a sure thing. The addage is 60% of improvisation sucks. But the 40% is golden. You might have caught Lila on an off night. You might have not liked the format...either way...always know that an improv show from an improv company is not going to be the same. That is the magic (and the risk) of improvisational theatre. Please, all festival reviewers...keep in mind that when you see Oui Be Negroes, or Framework..or Zepplin Improv...or anything that is not scipted theatre...that you have to preface all of your reviews with "The Night I saw them" It is improv. You are never going to know what you are going to get. So, Kudos to Lila! Kudos to improv theatre...Sure...someone might have thought you blew...but goddamit...it is improv...I give you another two stars...just for getting out there and killing them. With the warmest and heartfelt regards,

Shaun Landry

Not sure exactly what a "world of truthful artistic play" is and maybe I went in with the expectation of seeing regular improv, but what I saw was just confusing. Wasn't sure what the cast was trying to do and they didn't seem that sure either. And there was no long form stories going on anywhere that I could tell. Wasn't too much sketch either. I should've stuck with going to see Oui be Negroes.

I loved the intimate energy - as an audience you feel a part of it. I liked the "dream" improv the most! Funny, poignant, personal. I am already a fan. I'm going back to see their show again tomorrow!

Great performance!
Funny but sad, inspirational and unexpected, just like life itself.
Be ready, you can see moments from your own life.
