I love improv, but what was especially striking about this show was how
theatrical it was. The group was willing to go for the emotional choices
- sadness, laughter, anger - without trying to "make it funny".
For me, this marks great improv. Wonderfully witty scenes, sharp quick humour
and an all-around great time.

I've seen this improve show twice {and they don't even use the same material
from one show to another ...how amazing is that} and they absolutely blew
the audience away in less than 3 minutes Wed night. Amazing sight to see.
These folks are way talented , funny and I could easily imagine seeing them
a third time especially since for the Sun 11:30 am show they're serving
bagels and either mamosas or Moses. [ I'm pretty sure she said mamosas but
a heads up just in case it really is Moses] Even sober you'll laugh your
ass off. Catch them now before they're playing to sold out crowds in the
newly revitalized and sanitized for your protection Filmore Noir.

A lot of Fringe shows are getting hype, but how about some love for Oui
Be Negroes? This is the kind of improv I love - seeing the performers in
their element and loving what they are doing. In the show I saw, cast member
Shaun had an opportunity in a scene to go off an incredible rant about the
things in our society that she's had enough of!! It was an amazingly passionate
impromtu performance, and her fellow cast members were skilled enough to
let her take center stage for a few minutes of Fringe glory.

The problem with improv at the Fringe is that - if you make it to one show
and enjoy it - you'll have that gnawing sensation that you're missing something
when you can't get to the other performances. Oh well - it's a good problem
to have, and I'm glad that I saw one of the Oui Be Negroes' performances
at least! Shaun is a strong, intelligent, leonine presence onstage, and
she doesn't miss a thing, Hans is sweetly innocent (or at least he was when
I saw him), and Anastasia Elizondo is captivating - I especially enjoyed
watching her as Hans's "date". And I keep wondering what else
I missed, and will miss, unfortunately, during their other performances!
You don't have to, though - check them out.

Oui Be Negroes were so great tonight. One of the female actors (do not know
her name), gave one of the best monolouges to the delight of the small audience.
All the performers are engaging to watch. This is a must see show. I'm glad
I went.

This show kicked some serious ass. In addition to the best improv rant I've
ever seen (by Shaun Landry), all three have a very smooth, creative, spontaneous
connection- this troupe has something real and impressive to offer... a
specificity and level of fluid creativity that is rare and a delight....
a must see!

I really enjoyed the Oui Be Negroes performance on September the 11th. I
have never seen improvisation except for being taken to Bay Area Theatre
Sports for its Theatre Sports performance. This show was nothing I was expecting.
They started off the set with taking a suggestion of a song and making the
lyrics different to a jazz like beat. Then they did scenes on what they
came up with. It was so incredible to watch. There was laughter and sighs,
and giggles and even poignant nods from the audience. My friend and I fought
afterwards if they had not made it up. She thought it was scripted. I wish
to go back to see if they do the same thing over. If this is what San Francisco
Improv is right now, I wish to see more. They wrote in their program "We
Hope we don't suck" You did not Oui Be Negroes.

Really good improv. Shaun Landry and Ana Elizondo really were fantastic.
I'm not a good judge of improv, but the show was really funny and poignant.
Not the kind of show like Whose Line (which is what I was expecting), but
the way they did it seemed like I was watching scripted theatre. So well
done! They really battled a very hot space.

I personally cannot wait to see Oui Be Negroes at the Fringe. I had a chance
to see them twice. Once at Spanganga, and a second time at The San Francisco
Improv Festival. They are possibly (next to True Fiction Magazine) the best
improv ensemble I have seen in years. Forget the fact that the majority
is black. These people are really, really good improvisers. I would bet
you would have to get your tickets early for this show. It was pretty full
when I saw them at The Improv Festival. |
