Tesla's White Pigeon, it's like watching some new game that has been invented
and you're watching it being played for the first time. not knowing the
rules yet can make it seem like an inside joke at times, but this sensation
dissappears when you give up trying to "figure it out." it's more
like a painting than a play. fragmented. illusive. intriguing. though it
can be confusing at times, a strange intimacy creeps over the whole experience.
the space stays charged from beginning to end. i almost hated not knowing
how. perhaps abstract, but it is representative of performance at it's simplest
and athletic form.

three actors with suspenders and a pile of suitcases, disconnected text,
noise music that fades in and out, a short thirty something running time,
audience was 3/4ths full at exit mainstage and they seemed to be alternately
enthusiastic(hoots and hollers at the curtain) or dumbfounded. i heard more
than one post show conversation in the hallway that started with, 'what
was that?'
i think mugwumpin needs to abandon the anti-narrative method they claim
to take from lecoq/naropa and deliver some theatre that justifies the residencies
and support they have hoarded since they arrived years ago. i have been
to several of their shows and the singular impression i am left with is
one of insider arrogance and privilege.

basically this is the kind of show that gives theater a bad name. I was
in turns bored and annoyed, by the meaningless, repetative, and mind-numbing,
whatever-ness of this production. I didn't "get it", because there
was nothing to get. If you are going to be absurd, non-linear, or surreal,
then at least try to make it interesting. JEEZ!

Whoosh...., that's the sound of the air this play generated going right
over my head, or in other words, I don't get it.

Witty, amusing and well-performed physical performance theater but somewhat
over-loaded with often inaccessible in-humor.

Don't know what it all meant, but it was a heck of a lot of fun. Three human
beings, or three puzzled cogs in some kind of cosmic machine? Three excellent
actors, that's for sure. Just leave behind any of your usual ideas of plot
, dialogue or character, and let this particular machine run its fascinating
course.

The concept was great and movement in theater is a wonderful idea but you
have to know choreography. |
