Sri Lanka, 1983. Six people sitting at the dinner table. A platter in the center with one boiled egg. All eyes watching as the host slices the egg into 6 pieces. A gunshot rings out. Not the first. Not the last. The writer/performer of last year's sold out "Taste of Enlightenment" returns with a gripping world premiere about her experience as a young American woman caught in the beginning of the Sri Lankan civil war. Best Play, Best Actress, Best Director Awards for "Taste of Enlightenment": Marin Fringe 2007. "…a depth and universality most playwrights never achieve. A writer/performer to follow."

Written and performed by Zoe Sheli Sameth, directed by David Ford and Larry Kornfeld

Zoe Sheli Sameth, writer/actor/singer/educator, premieres "Theatre of the Battle," a solo performance about her experiences being caught in the beginning of the twenty-six year Sri Lankan civil war, just months after the war is officially declared over. Zoe has performed installments of the play at the San Francisco Theater Festival, The Marsh, and Julia Morgan Center for the Arts.

Zoe performed "Taste of Enlightenment," a solo show about her experiences in Sri Lanka prior to the beginning of the civil war, at the 2008 SF Fringe Festival. Zoe is developing a full-length solo show combining "Taste of Enlightenment" and "Theatre of the Battle." She is a member of the Veterans Writing Group founded by Maxine Hong Kingston and is developing material for the full-length play with the support of that group, as well as with directors David Ford and Larry Kornfeld.

Zoe's first solo show "Out Tonight" -- performed at Shari Carlson's Studio 300 -- included 18 original songs, some of which have been featured recently on local radio.

During her time in Sri Lanka, Zoe learned relaxation and meditation techniques that she has adapted to help children, youth and adults reduce stress, cope with trauma, and create successful outcomes. As an independent consultant and trainer, Zoe teaches these methods to educators and students of all ages, as well as to other artists.

Zoe was honored and featured as CBS/Channel 5's "Hometown Hero," for her work with Bay area students and schools. She is a recipient of the Truman Scholarship, which funded the studies and travels that inspired "Theatre of the Battle" and "Taste of Enlightenment." Zoe has a Master's degree in Experiential Education, with a focus on Expressive Arts.

David Ford, writer/director, has been collaborating on new and unusual theatre for eighteen years. Recent work includes "Not a Genuine Black Man" with Brian Copeland, which performed more than 370 times in San Francisco, LA and New York, and Charlie Varon's "Rush Limbaugh in Night School" which had it's ten year revival playing to sold out houses. David's work has been seen regionally at the Public Theatre, Second Stage, St. Clement's, Dixon's Place, One Dream Theatre and Theatre for the New City (NY), Highways (LA) and Woolly Mammoth (Washington DC) as well as at theatres around the Bay Area including the Magic Theatre and Marin Theatre Company.

David Ford has been directing and collaborating on "Theatre of the Battle" throughout its development.

Lawrence Kornfeld, director/acting coach/consultant, has been directing and teaching acting for more than fifty years. He is the recipient of three Obie awards and two Show Business awards. He was co-founder and Director of Theater for the New City, Resident Director for The Judson Poets Theater and General Manager/Assistant Director for The Living Theatre. Larry Kornfeld is described as "second to none with his ground breaking fusion of theatricality and deep emotional subtlety: one of the handful of truly significant directors" by Dr. Steven Bottoms in his book "Playing Underground."

Larry Kornfeld has been consulting and providing direction on "Theatre of the Battle" since May 2009. Mr. Kornfeld first began working with Zoe in May 2008, co-directing "Taste of Enlightenment" for the 2008 SF Fringe Festival.
