The Dangerous Lorraines present the dream-like Café Lorraine, in which abstract imagery opens doors to new perceptions of human interactions in a collage of movement, text and video vignettes combined to expose the inner landscapes of need, control and the desire to be needed. Café Lorraine combines video and projections by filmmaker Brandon Van Meter, text by fiction writer Doug Rice and original music by composer Christian Cherry. The multi-ethnic cast demonstrates strength and vulnerability through quick glimpses of diverse emotional states- raw sensuality, both visceral and joyfully kinetic, collide through tangible partnering and spontaneous physicality. Cafe Lorraine is constructed in the spirit and memory of the late German tanztheater choreographer Pina Bausch whose revolutionary choreographic works have greatly influenced both choreographers.
Dangerous Lorraines DanceTheater is a performance group committed to the creation of contemporary and theatrical dance works. Originally founded in June 2004 by Artistic Director and choreographer Melissa Wynn, it is now Co-Directed with Artistic Director Lorelei Bayne. Both choreographers hail from New York City where they performed professionally for over a decade. Still in its early stage in Sacramento, CA, this project-based company features a range of dancers, actors, composers, musicians and designers to produce exciting, enchanting, visceral performances. It is the mission of the Dangerous Lorraines to challenge and entertain audiences while pushing artistic limits. It is our aim to build a nationally and internationally recognized dance/theatre company. Melissa Wynn is a teacher, choreographer, and performer originally from San Jose, California. She received her BFA in Dance from The Juilliard School and her MFA in Theatre and Dance with an emphasis in Choreography from the University of California, Davis. Her interdisciplinary choreography has intrigued and inspired audiences and has been presented in New York at the Danspace Project (at St. Mark's Church), Dixon Place, and Long Island University; in Davis, California at the Veteran's Memorial Theater, the University Club, and at the Robert and Magrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts; and in Texas at Sam Houston State University, Texas State University San Marcos, DiverseWorks and the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts in Houston. As a performer Wynn has worked with a variety of artists and professional dance companies in both California and in New York City where she resided for 17 years, most notably Bebe Miller (NYC) and Della Davidson (Davis, CA.) Lorelei Bayne, from Tampa, FL, came to the Sacramento area after fourteen years of professional work in New York City. Her choreography has been described as "thoughtful and beautifully awkward," and has been presented in venues throughout New York City, as well as in Connecticut, Philadelphia, Florida, Virginia and California. As a performer she danced professionally with Philadelphia-based companies, Melanie Stewart Dance Theater, and Karen Bamonte Danceworks, and in New York City- with Elizabeth Streb/Ringside, Clarinda MacLow's cml performance group, FREEFALL,ltd, as well as many independent NYC dancemakers.
