"Etta still can’t cook. I used to go over to her place t’borrow some sugar or an egg or two, I’d walk into her kitchen and there she’d be—standin’ at the stove starin’ off into the distance like she was lookin’ at somethin’ really far away, tryin’ to see just exactly what it was. Meantime, the potato water’s boilin’ over, and the beets or lima beans or whatever she was cookin’up was more’n likely permanently stuck to the bottom of the pan. When suppertime came, she’d serve up what she had in whatever state it was in.
Funny thing is, once I was gone, she cooked for Harold—my husband. That man was finally eatin’ what he really deserved."
-from No Fences, a midwestern tale
Two women, one tornado and lots of blueberry pie. Etta's lifelong best friend just up and dies and her lesbian granddaughter moves in next door, reminding her that love in the sticks is anything but ordinary. Developed with and directed by Amy Mueller. Written and performed by Jan Probst.
