5review = Improv by a troup of two men and a woman. They are quite talented,
and I always admire anyone with enough guts to expose themselves in the
way that improv requires. Some of it is baudy, and some of it includes
bits that they have obviously rehearsed. Overall enjoyable -- they have
plenty of energy and involve the audience in engaging but non-threatening
ways.

dubbing and the "Family members" skit were some of the funniest
things I've seen at the fringe! Lots of laughs and I wasn't forced to dance!

5review = The Composte Comedy Heap presents the improv/sketch comedy show
"Dirty on the Inside" at the 1999 San Francisco Fringe Theatre
Festival. Exit Theater, 156 Eddy Street, San Francisco, through Wednesday,
Sept. 15. Tickets/info: (415) 673-3847, sffringe.org

- Here's the scene: It's late on a Monday night at the San Francisco
Fringe Festival. A mere 15 people, mostly couples and a few loners, sit
isolated in a 70 seat theater. Three young, attractive comedians enter.
They squint into the lights. They do their pre-show routine in front of
the audience - - they drop their pants and mime going to the bathroom on
three toilet. They exit. The lights come up again. One comedian asks for
the penultimate place to get it on. Penultimate? The second to last place
to get it on? The 15 people in the audience scratch their heads. The comedian
says, it's going to be a long night. We agree.
- After this auspicious beginning, Joel Bryant, Gregg Spillman, and Devon
Green, with their work clearly cut out for them, proceed to win back the
audience, charm them wonderfully, and entertain them with an irreverent,
joyful blend of improvisation.
- These three grow on your funny bone like a mushroom, like a fungus,
and as the audience laughs harder, they only get crazier. We were treated
to the dating game, where an audience member had to choose between Testicularis,
the god of fertility (sporting a two foot schlong under his toga) and the
Grim Reaper. When the audience member chose Death, saying, "I like
to root for the underdog" a dejected Testicularis waves his hands
over her head and says, "Boom, you're pregnant."
- Another audience favorite was the family guessing game. A member of
the audience named Francisco described three members of his family, and
the comedians had to act out a scene as those members. Every time they
said something the family member would never say, Francisco would hit a
clown buzzer; every time they would get something right, he would hit a
bell. But before long, Francisco was hitting the bell for anything they
would do, and the ensuing zaniness was had the audience nearly in tears.
- I don't know if you will get to see as funny a show as we did, but
The Composte Heap transformed 15 isolated people into a community of laughing
friends by the end of their 60 minutes, and for that, I thank them and
consider myself one of their new fans.

- review = These folx have great performance energy and fabulous physical
presences. Great impersonatrons (it's hard dammit) of famous actors. Good
relationship with the audience (we were very vocal) -- important in improv.

5review = O.K. Improv. Performers seem talented but go for the the obvious
and cheap laugh nearly every time. Two best pieces brought audience members
on stage. On the whole very L.A.slick. For character driven impro see BBT
Nudity is Contagious.(To be fair some of the audience howled at all the
oral sex jokes.)
