100 Years of Sex Acts

review in the SF Chronicle March 2006
by Robert Hurwitt

Eastenders Repertory Company offers three programs of intriguing, seldom-seen one-acts by six important playwrights. Series A, directed by Susan Evans, consists of August Strindberg's sardonic comedy about marital infidelities, “Playing with Fire,” in a flatly acted and staged production, and Federico Garcia Lorca's curious, oddly compelling “The Love of Don Perlimplin and Belisa in His Garden.” The frankly erotic tale of an aged, childishly innocent don's marriage to the sensual, promiscuous young Belisa is acted with some flair but haphazardly paced. Series A plays alternate nights with Series B (Tennessee Williams' “And Tell Sad Stories of the Deaths of Queens…” and Dacia Maraini's “Dialogue Between a Prostitute and Her Client”) and Series C (Caryl Churchill's “Three More Sleepless Nights” and Edward Albee's “Marriage Play”).
