- Her Majesty by Sean Owens
- nytheatre.com
-
- Her Majesty is mile-a-minute lunacy, deeply rooted in the nobility
of theatre. Like a two-person Noises Off, it's a whirlwind of people, places
and plots, but the greatest gift to the audience is its sparkling dialogue
and keen characterizations. Set backstage of a touring production of Hamlet,
Christina Augello plays a fading Broadway legend struggling to accept that
she's Gertrude now and not Ophelia, a Hedda Hopper-style gossip columnist
and a visiting Queen from a small European country. Sean Owens plays her
devoted dresser, her ox-like husband (who's cast himself as the Melancholy
Dane),and a tongue-tied awestruck Stage Manager, with a distant secret.
- Set in an era best described as simply, "Not Now," Her Majesty
is both a curative for the looming prospect of 'message plays,' while at
the same time being a sincere and soulful Valentine to the theatre, the
grandeur and glory of women, and the ability in each of us to be greater
than the sum of our parts. Full of breathless quick-change and derring-do,
Her Majesty offers prime Fringe fare: two actors who work well together,
performing a script they're deeply devoted to. Written especially for this
year's FRIGID Fest, Her Majesty will fulfill all expectations for both
sheer silliness and consummate showmanship.
- "Following my success at last year's FRIGID with my solo show
Naught But Pirates, I wanted to include (friend and producer) Christina
Augello in the fun. We threw around a lot of ideas, and agreed that it
should be something in the spirit of the Festival... something that would
fill the Red Room stage to overflowing, and give audiences a really memorable,
and if possible, touching experience. It sounds funny to say that we're
being heartfelt in a farce, but that's the way we work." Sean
