- A stellar member of
the beat pantheon, writer Diane di Prima cofounded
the New
York Poets Theatre in the early '60s, and both of
these "word
scores" date from that period. Like is an elliptical
satire on
middle-class complacency, while Murder Cake leaps
into
full-blown dream logic marinated in classical literature.
The
language is delicious, and there are intimations of
di Prima's
mature power, but the poet has come a long way since
these
pieces, which seem distinctly of their time. Despite
a few
strong performers, the production is disappointingly
amateurish and predictable even at its most surreal.
(Rosenstein) $10. Tues-Wed, 7pm. Through Wed/26.
