Remember Laughin' Sal, the mechanical laughing
lady who for more than half a century mesmerized
generations of visitors to San Francisco's
once-upon-a-time Playland at the Beach? For
those who chuckled along with Sal, she seemed
as much a part of San Francisco lore as the
Golden Gate Bridge and those little cable cars
climbing halfway to the stars. When Playland at
the Beach bit the sand, Sal was rescued and
continues to laugh on at the Musée Mécanique.
Now comes "Sal," a new comic drama honoring
the memory of Playland at the Beach and its
irrepressible laughing lady. In this new piece by
Sarah Ells, produced by Deviant Dames
Dramatics, Sal comes to life and busts out, with
the help of a traveling freak show, and wants to
talk about the things she's witnessed over the
years from her perch alongside the ocean.
Through her eyes the audience sees the real San
Francisco, its birth and the bizarre history that
San Franciscans have come to revere. —Belinda
