Fri/19-Sat/20, 8pm. Playwright Fred Newman presents a
poignant, and sometimes jarring, look at the achievements
of the
late, great Brooklyn Dodger Jackie Roosevelt Robinson
in this first
full-production play produced by the Bay Area Committee
for
Independent Culture (BACIC). Told through an entirely
subjective
lens, Stealin' Home gives a fictional account of the
first man to
break the Major League's color barrier, and the mental
triumph
and anguish Robinson endured as an icon for black America.
The
action centers on the relationship between Robinson (Algin
Ford)
and Dodgers shortstop Pee Wee Reese (Adan Chipkin) and
their
encounters with waitress and soul-of-the-ages, aptly
named
Sojourner (Jamesetta Bunn). Under the keen direction
of Edris
Cooper-Anifowoshe, Stealin' Home provides ample insight
into
the transformation of baseball from America's favorite
pastime to
big business and explores the harsh, often painful tolls
of
integration on the African American psyche. (Chan)
